Royals' Michael Wacha: Fans eight in 13th win

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Michael Wacha struck out eight batters in his 13th win of the season on Wednesday night.

Wacha allowed just two runs on five hits and one walk in 6 1/3 innings of work as the Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-2. It was Wacha's second straight win and his fourth in his last five starts. The 30-year-old right-hander now has a 3.30 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 177 1/3 innings pitched this season. He has struck out 168 batters and walked just 41.

Wacha's outing was a key factor in the Royals' victory. The Royals offense struggled to get anything going against Tigers starter Tarik Skubal, but they were able to take advantage of some defensive miscues by the Tigers in the late innings. The Royals scored three runs in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth to take a 6-2 lead. Scott Barlow pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure the win for the Royals.

The Royals are now 60-61 on the season and are just 3 1/2 games out of first place in the AL Central. They will face the Tigers again on Thursday night in the second game of their three-game series.
